NEW YEAR PLANS

Lowcountry Alumni –

Happy New Year!  We trust that you and your family had a great holiday season and are ready to start the new year with us. We have several events planned for 2023.

First, we will continue our quarterly luncheons.  The next one is scheduled for 7 Feb at Frankie Bones in Bluffton.   The start time is 1130, and we will be ordering from a limited menu.  The luncheons are a great way to meet other alumni in a relaxed informal setting.

Our annual luncheon will be on 13 May at the Callawassie Club on Callawassie Island.  This lunch will feature a guest speaker, retired Admiral Bob Willard.  It promises to be an enjoyable day.

April will include a lunch and tour of the Burnt Church Distillery in Bluffton.  In June or July, we’re hoping to arrange a tour and buffet lunch at the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum.  More on all this later.

We’re also planning viewing parties for the Air Force and Army games, as well as flag placements at the graves of Academy graduates in Beaufort National Cemetery on Veteran’s Day.

We encourage all members to stay up to date on our events by checking myUSNA.com regularly. We also welcome suggestions for future events and activities, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with us with your ideas (contact your current President Tom Cavanaugh: tomcusna69@gmail.com .

More detailed information will be provided as we get closer to each event.  We’re looking forward to a great year with the Lowcountry Chapter and we hope to see you at our upcoming get-togethers.

AND A REMINDER –  the Chapter is transitioning to a new platform for communications – if you haven’t yet, go to myUSNA.com and register to keep up with all the latest local and national USNA happenings.

Beat Army often,
Your Lowcountry Chapter Board

BOARD ELECTIONS

Posted: 4/20/2022

Shipmates,

It’s annual election time again! Nominations are open for all positions on your Chapter Board of Directors with the exception of the Office of President which will once again be ably manned by our current VP/President Elect, Tom Cavanaugh ’69.

Our current Board members are as follows:
President: Dave Igyarto ’74
VP/President Elect: Tom Cavanaugh ’69
Secretary: Doug Ogden ’67
Treasurer: John Scanlan ’83
Director: Harry Gardner ’95
Director: Tim Johnson ’02
Director: Rich Weidman ’63
Director: Megan Williams ’93
Past President: Tom Anderson ’60

As most of you know, a number of current Board members have had multiple terms in office. However, in the last few years we have finally begun to make progress in getting new volunteers to step up and take leadership positions in the Chapter. We encourage you all to do the same this year! The time commitment is modest as the Board meets quarterly for approximately two hours. Much of our work between meetings is done by email.

If you are interested, you may self-volunteer as a candidate or you may nominate another Chapter member as long as you have that member’s concurrence. Please submit your nominations to President Dave Igyarto ’74 at igyartodp@icloud.com Nominations will be open until Friday, 29 April 2022. The election, by email vote, will be held in May, and the newly elected slate of officers will take office as of June 1, 2022, per our Chapter ByLaws. Only dues-paying Chapter Members are eligible to vote and to run for office.

GO NAVY!

SPRING LUNCHEON – APRIL 2, 2022

Posted: 3/12/2022

Shipmates,

For our annual Spring Luncheon this year, our USNA Alumni Association Low Country Chapter will host a more casual event at Bostwick Pavilion located at the Moss Creek Marina. This catered buffet of sandwiches, salads and included beverages will begin at 1200 Saturday, 2 April 2022. The Bostwick Pavilion overlooks Mackay Creek and the Moss Creek Marina. It is a beautiful, comfortable, and casual venue. (See details in the attached flyer.)

Our featured speaker is Captain Robert “Bo” Johns, Deputy Commandant for Professional Development at the Naval Academy.  Captain Johns is responsible for five divisions: Officer Accession & Talent Management; USNA Sailing; Seamanship & Navigation; Waterfront Readiness; and Training.   He will highlight changes to the seamanship and navigation curriculum which emphasize rules of the road, ship handling, electronic & celestial navigation, and JPME fundamentals and also discuss other topics including the details of how service assignments are made (different from service selections prior to 1995).  The updated curriculum is informed by the Navy and relatively recent events with the USS McCain and USS Fitzgerald – very timely and relevant training!

We are now taking reservations! The cost of the luncheon remains at only $25 per person, a real bargain in today’s inflationary environment. Please RSVP to Dave Igyarto at igyartodp@icloud.com by MARCH 25th. The registration date is important since we need to provide an accurate headcount to our caterer as well as a list of attendees to Moss Creek Security at least one week in advance of the event.

Why wait?  Sign up now! This annual Chapter event is a great start to a new season of fun activities with your fellow alumni and guests.  Let’s come out and enjoy a new venue with great views of our SC low country vistas while renewing friendships and listening to an excellent speaker with an important message.

GO NAVY!

USNAAA, Lowcountry Chapter
